PRODUCT & mATERIALS
What makes Narwhal toppers stand out from other brands?
Narwhal is developing the world’s first carbon fiber truck topper. It is designed to be the strongest and lightest on the market, outperforming traditional materials like aluminum, steel, or fiberglass. Narwhal will feature industry-first options, such as a removable rear panel and a turret hatch.
What are the benefits of a removable rear panel?
There are many scenarios—whether loading bikes over the tailgate or items longer than your truck bed—where you want to keep the tailgate up and load items. Usually, a topper makes this difficult and causes the rear access panel to flap in the wind. That’s why we created a removable rear panel with a hinge mechanism that allows quick removal by disconnecting two bolts and the strut attachment.
What is the turret hatch feature?
The Turret Hatch is a Narwhal Topper feature that lets users remove the optional roof panel. This enables customers to stand in the bed and use the roof as an elevated workspace for any task you can imagine. Think photography gear, spotting scopes, hunting, or tailgate DJ setups—the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.
Why carbon fiber?
Carbon fiber provides an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, resists corrosion, and performs well under extreme conditions, making it perfect for off-road adventures, tough work environments, and everyday use.
What is the difference between a Topper, Cap, Canopy, and Camper shell?
In the US, Toppers and Caps are commonly used to describe a hard-shell cover for a pickup truck bed. A Canopy is a term frequently used in South Africa and Australia; however, it refers to the same thing. A Camper shell is usually a full camper with an integrated sleeping system built into the unit.
Are Narwhal toppers weatherproof?
Yes. The MK1 shell is designed and built with weather-tight seals and materials that resist rain, dust, snow, and extreme temperatures. However, we cannot guarantee the watertightness of your truck’s actual bed. Some manufacturers leave gaps where water can enter from below the truck.
What’s the weight of a Narwhal topper?
Final weights vary by truck model. The Narwhal Mk1 Topper is lighter than competitors made of aluminum, steel, and fiberglass, typically weighing between 100–130 lbs., depending on the configuration. It is the lightest hardshell topper on the market.
What does MK1 mean?
The Narwhal MK1 Topper name comes from the military’s system of naming the first version of a particular system. Since this is the first version of the Narwhal Topper, we named it the Narwhal MK1 Topper.
Why do I care about how light my topper is?
Payload matters. Every truck has a safe payload limit, which is the maximum weight the manufacturer recommends the truck support in the bed and cabin while still meeting safety and performance standards. The more equipment and people you carry, the less payload capacity remains. Our goal is to provide a topper that supports various uses and helps you conserve your payload for tools and gear needed for your specific activities, whether off-roading, the jobsite, or recreational pursuits.
Do I need to modify my suspension to support the Narwhal MK1 Topper?
No, this is one of the main benefits of our product. Being just over 100 lbs has little impact on the sag caused by our toppers. Often, adding a topper results in significant sag at the back of your truck, which can affect the factory rake, a key factor in your truck's handling and performance. Traditional toppers, which can weigh between 250-350 lbs., can cause your truck to sit several inches lower. This is not ideal for the performance and safety features your truck was built for. Adding heavy, permanent weight to your bed may also require suspension upgrades, which can cost thousands of dollars, to support the load without harming your truck’s handling and safety.
FITMENT & VEHICLE COMPATIBILITY
What trucks do you support?
Initial fitments will include full-size, mid-size trucks, and HD trucks for Ford, Toyota, Chevy/GMC, Ram, and Jeep, with additional models added based on demand. A comprehensive fitment guide will be released before launch, along with our configurator tool. Please subscribe to our newsletter or email info@narwhaltrucktoppers.com to stay informed about our timelines.
Can I install the topper myself?
Yes. The Narwhal topper is designed for DIY installation using standard hand tools and a torque wrench. Weighing just over 100 pounds, two adults should be able to lift and position the topper for installation. We will provide video instructions for proper installation closer to our official launch in fall 2025. (Our customer service team is also happy to assist with any questions about installation.)
Can I have the topper installed by a Narwhal Dealer?
We plan to quickly expand our dealer network after launch to serve customers who prefer not to self-install. This will take some time, and we will update our website with the dealer list as we grow it.
Will I be able to transfer the topper to another truck?
Only if the other truck has the same bed size and model generation. Carbon fiber construction ensures durability, but fit is crucial. Example: A Narwhal Topper may fit multiple generations of F150; however, our mounting systems are designed to work with the specific generation of trucks' tie-down points. So, depending on which generation of truck you initially order, the mounting brackets will fit that truck. We will provide additional mounting brackets on a case-by-case basis as they become available.
ACESSORIES & FEATURES
What accessories will be available?
- Roof rails and risers
- Side window sliders
- Fixed side windows
- Turret hatch option
- Lockable side cabinets
- Every Narwhal topper will come standard with L-track on both the external and internal sections of the roof. This allows customers to get creative when developing attachment methods for accessories tailored to their specific needs.
Can I mount a rooftop tent or gear on the roof?
Absolutely. The carbon fiber structure is designed to handle high static and dynamic roof loads, making it great for RTTs, recovery gear, and adventure setups.
ORDERING & AVAILABILITY
How much will it cost?
Pricing will be competitive with high-end toppers. MSRP pricing will be announced soon, along with truck model and accessories.
Where are Narwhal toppers manufactured?
All composite and glass components will be manufactured and assembled right here in the USA.
When can I order a Narwhal topper?
Pre-orders will open in Fall 2025, coinciding with our official launch at the SEMA Show, which takes place November 4-7 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Sign up at narwhaltrucktoppers.com to get notified.
Will there be a waitlist or special launch offer?
Yes. Details of this offer will be announced shortly before our official launch at SEMA in November.
How long should I expect to wait for my topper?
Delivery times will depend on the truck you order your topper for. Our current tooling schedule includes the Ford F-150 (2009-present) with a 5’ bed, the Toyota Tacoma (short bed) for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations, and the Ford Ranger (2024-present) as the initial models we will produce in volume. We anticipate a lead time of less than six months for the first deliveries of these models. We will adjust the tooling plan for subsequent trucks based on the demand generated by pre-orders. We have a total of 28 models planned, and our goal is to deliver toppers for all of them within 24 months. Stay tuned for the launch of our configurator tool, where you will be able to view all available models.
How does the pre-order work?
Narwhal Truck Toppers is 100% employee-owned, and we have bootstrapped our entire business. It has been hard, but nothing worth doing is easy. Therefore, we are relying on our customer base to support our growth through pre-order revenue. Your pre-order helps us deliver a world-class product and accelerate our progress. The more pre-orders we receive, the sooner we can fulfill all our orders. Narwhal will offer an exclusive launch discount to our early adopters. Narwhal will not offer a discount like this again.
Does Narwhal offer a US military or first responder discount?
Yes, the early adopters will be offered at a discounted launch price that won't be available once we reach that goal. After hitting that number, the only future discounts will be for US military personnel and first responders. We recognize that service isn't limited to just the military and law enforcement; it also includes firefighters and healthcare professionals who dedicate their lives to serving and protecting others.
